Dr. Laura MacDonald earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Western Ontario before completing her Doctor of Optometry degree, magna cum laude, at the Illinois College of Optometry in 2009. Her clinical training included internships at leading institutions across the U.S., where she gained experience in cataract care, ocular disease, pediatrics, oculoplastics, and specialty contact lenses. She went on to complete a cornea and contact lens residency at SUNY College of Optometry and the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York City.
Dr. MacDonald has a strong commitment to giving back, having served as Director of Community Services during optometry school and volunteering internationally in Mexicali, Mexico, providing eye care to thousands in need. She has a special interest in ocular disease, pediatrics, and contact lenses, and is certified to diagnose and manage ocular disease in Canada and the U.S. She is an active member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists, the Canadian Association of Optometrists, and the College of Optometrists of Ontario.
Being back in her hometown since 2010, Dr. MacDonald is now proud to be the sole owner of In Focus Eyecare as of 2024. She is passionate about supporting her community and has introduced a monthly charitable giving initiative. Outside the clinic, she enjoys life with her husband, Jon, and their two children, Nicholas and Sloane. You’ll often find her starting her day at the gym, cheering on her kids, or searching out delicious gluten-free food.
Dr. Gerry Day, OD, P. ENG., Associate
Dr. Gerry Day has recently retired from practice ownership, and now works part time in the practice and still loves spending time with his patients and staff. He is dedicated to providing the best eye care through continuing education and learning about new technologies.
Dr. Day believes in supporting local, national, and international charities. For example, he previously served on the the Huron House Boys’ Home board of directors for 10 years and for six years was also honoured to be a member of the board of directors of Eye Recommend, Canada’s premier practice management and buyers’ group.
When he’s not in the office or volunteering, you can find Dr. Day spending time with his family, travelling, and getting outdoors for wing foiling, mountain biking and boating.
Dr. Monique Lis, OD, Associate
Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Dr. Monique Lis graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biology from Lakehead University in 2011. She went on to earn her Doctor of Optometry degree from the New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA.
Her clinical experience began in her first year of training when she was involved with elementary school vision screenings. She had the opportunity to work in several clinics and hospitals in and around the Boston area. In her final year, her clinical rotations included ocular disease at Manchester VA Medical Center in New Hampshire, pediatrics and primary care at Martha Elliott Health Center/Boston Children’s Hospital in Boston, and contact lenses and primary care at Marino Eyecare in Miami, FL.
Dr. Lis is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists, the Canadian Association of Optometrists, and the College of Optometrists of Ontario. She is certified by the Canadian Examiners in Optometry and the National Board of Examiners in Optometry to treat and manage ocular disease.
Dr. Lis is happy to be a part of In Focus Eyecare, serving the community in both the Sarnia and Grand Bend areas. Outside of the office, she can be found chasing after her two daughters with her husband and visiting friends and family. In her spare time, Dr. Lis enjoys running, travelling, trying new foods, and spending time by the lake. She has a Polish background and speaks the language fluently.
Dr. Kristen Johnson, OD, Associate
Dr. Kristen Johnson grew up in Sarnia. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Western Ontario in 2013. She then obtained her Doctorate in Optometry in 2018 at the Michigan College of Optometry (MCO) in Big Rapids, Michigan.
Dr. Johnson’s clinical externships in her fourth and final year of optometry school were at private optometry practices, the Aleda E Lutz Veterans Affairs hospital in Saginaw, Michigan, and at Henry Ford Optimeyes in Troy, Michigan. While at MCO, she served as president of Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (SVOSH), which organizes medical eye care mission trips to underserved countries. In her third year of school, she participated in a mission trip to the small Caribbean island of Dominica, where she helped provide eye exams and glasses to thousands of residents of the island.
Dr. Johnson is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists, the Canadian Association of Optometrists, and the College of Optometrists of Ontario. She is certified by the Optometry Examining Board of Canada and the National Board of Examiners in Optometry to treat and manage ocular disease.
Dr. Johnson always knew that she wanted to come back home to Sarnia, and she is excited to provide comprehensive eye care to patients of all ages in both Sarnia and Grand Bend locations. In her spare time, Dr. Johnson likes to read, cook, cycle, and spend time with her husband and their two children.
Dr. Amru Abou-Zidan, OD, Associate
Dr. Amru Abou-Zidan earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, before continuing his studies in the Clinical Vision Science program at Dalhousie University. During this time, an internship at the IWK Children’s Hospital sparked his passion for ocular health, binocular vision, and pediatric eye care.
He later completed his Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo, where he was actively involved in leadership and volunteer initiatives. Dr. Abou-Zidan served as President of the Waterloo chapter of Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (SVOSH), helping bring eye care services to underserved communities around the world. His leadership and commitment were recognized with the Dr. Michael Gutwein Memorial Award.
Now practicing in Grand Bend, Ontario, Dr. Abou-Zidan has a special interest in ocular disease, myopia control, and pediatric eye care. He is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists and is committed to providing personalized, patient-focused vision care.
Fluent in English and Arabic, Dr. Abou-Zidan enjoys connecting with patients from diverse backgrounds. Outside the clinic, he enjoys staying active through soccer, hiking, and traveling.
