Cataract Exam & Management

Cataracts Don’t Have to Make Your World Cloudy

Cataracts are a remarkably common issue among adults over the age of 60. In fact, almost every adult will experience some sort of cataract development by the time they turn 65.

So now you know that cataracts are in some cases inevitable. But do you know what cataracts really are? And do you know what your options are once you start to develop them yourself?

How Are Cataracts Formed?

Your eye’s natural lens yellows with age and sun exposure. This results in dim, blurry vision and duller colours, like looking through a dirty window.

Living With Cataracts

When cataracts first develop, you likely won’t notice much change. But as they progress, you’ll probably start to notice that your vision seems cloudy. Sometimes, this issue can be remedied with an updated prescription and a few lifestyle adjustments like switching to large print books.

There comes a point where glasses and bold fonts won’t be enough to help you see better. At this point, you’ll most likely want to pursue surgery.

Risk Factors

Although everyone will have some kind of cataract development eventually, there are a few factors that increase your chance of developing cataracts at a younger age. Eye surgeries and eye injuries can both increase the risk of cataracts, as well as prolonged UV exposure. Patients with diabetes are more likely to develop cataracts, as are smokers. Obesity can contribute to cataracts as well, making proper nutrition an important part of caring for your eyes.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a relatively quick, extremely effective procedure. Patients typically report an amazing return of clarity and colour intensity. The surgery is done one eye at a time, and only takes about 10 minutes per eye.

Using a small ultrasonic device, your ophthalmologist will break up the cloudy lens and get rid of the pieces. Then, they’ll insert an intraocular lens through a small incision in your cornea. This artificial lens will look and function just like your eye’s natural lens, only without the cloudy cataract. Since the lens isn’t made from the same materials as your natural lens, it will never develop a cataract.

If you’d like to be assessed for cataracts, book an appointment with us today. We’ll tell you more about the surgery, and assess your overall eye health. We’ll happily answer all your questions and take the time to make sure you understand everything we’ve covered.

If you decide to go forward with cataract surgery, we’ll refer you to a highly skilled ophthalmologist for your procedure. We’ll also follow up with you regularly after the operation to make sure your eyes are healing properly.

Today, upgraded lenses are available for increased definition and clarity, astigmatism correction, and even multifocal options. Laser assisted surgery is now available in advanced clinics. This helps make impeccable and accurate incisions and precuts the lens to minimize postoperative complications.

The latest technology involves lasers accurately measuring the eye during surgery to even further increase the accuracy for the visual result.
